Blade Nzimande Latest News on NSFAS

NSFAS latest updates – After sending out an official communication to all institutions of higher learning regarding the payment process of allowances, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) has urged institutions to cooperate.

Nsfas has confirmed to have received funds for the first quarter of the financial year from the National Treasury.

Department of Higher Education and Training Minister Dr. Blade Nzimande has called all institutions of higher learning to ensure that they finalise the submission of their registration data to Nsfas to ensure that there are no delays in processing the transfers.

In a statement, Nsfas has confirmed:

Nsfas will release funds on Friday, April 08, 2022, to all institutions based on registration records received –  in order to pay student allowances.

As the government’s financial year starts in April – March, National Treasury releases funds in April. The Covid-19 pandemic had disrupted the academic period, thus extending the payment of allowances.

Some institutions pay registered students in February and March, then claim it from Nsfas in April.

This is done so that students who are not in class or who have deregistered from the institutions are not paid, hence claims are after the registrations window period.

For instance, the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) is one of those institutions, and in turn, Wits claims its funds back.

According to DHET, institutions that have complied with 2022 approved Nsfas Eligibility Criteria and Conditions for Financial Aid will receive payment from Nsfas.
