Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) 2023 Grade 1 & 8 Admission Now Open
Today parents in Gauteng will start submitting applications to the provincial education department to secure the placement of their children at their preferred schools. These applications apply to learners starting Grade 1 and Grade 8 in 2023.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) says they are ready for the upcoming school admission application season. This as the department’s online system will be open for Grade 1 and 8 from 22 July 2022 and close on 19 August 2022.
Parents can apply online at www.gdeadmissions.gov.za. Alternatively, parents can visit one of the 47 decentralised walk-in centres should they require assistance with submitting applications
Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has assured parents that improvements have been made to the admissions website making it easier for parents to use and submit applications. A notable improvement will allow parents to register on the admissions website without all the required documentation. This was not possible in previous years.
Additional improvements will allow parents to enter their ID numbers and their other information (Name + Surname) will automatically be populated in the required fields.
Parents will also be able to use their live location as an address reference point. This makes it easier to apply for schools within your home address’ feeder zone.
The system can accept 40 000 individual applications at any given time. This is important as many parents will now be able to submit applications at the same time without running a risk of losing their progress if the system crashes.
“We’ve tried to move with the times to be quite frank and ensure that it’s a smart process that can really take applications so I’m inviting parents tomorrow morning at eight o’clock, please join us and you’ll enjoy the trip with us” said Lesufi.
Documents Required For Gauteng School Applications
- Parent and Child ID or Passport or Refugee Permit or asylum Seeker Permit or Permanent Residence Permit or Study Permit
- South African Birth certificate
- Proof of Home Address
- Proof of Work Address
A clinic card/vaccination card or immunisation card is required for Grade 1 applications while the latest school report is required for Grade 8 applications.
In the past, the GDE received a large volume of applications for specific in-demand schools. These high pressure schools receive many more applications than they have spaces available.
Lesufi says these schools will receive increased funding in the coming years to build additional classrooms. This will help alleviate pressure on these schools.
