GDE 2023 Online Admission Applications A Success Despite Technical Issues

Gauteng opened it’s online admission system for new applicants on 22 July and saw a successful day unfold, despite an unforeseen technical challenge.

The 2023 Online Admissions System opened on the morning of 22 July 2022, and saw over 165 000 applications successfully captured and processed by noon.

However, due to the heavy influx of applications, parents/caregivers applying on behalf of next year’s Grade 1’s and Grade 8’s hit a technical roadblock.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) announced in a media statement released on the same day, that the challenge endured by the Online Admissions System was due to a temporary restriction by Google Maps.

In the statement, the GDE notes that “The GDE 2023 Online Admissions System was temporarily restricted by Google Maps due to reaching a maximum of 6 000 requests per minute, which resulted in parents not being able to view and select schools when applying.”

The challenge was soon resolved 30 minutes later, allowing parents to successfully complete their child’s application.

In the released media statement, Gauteng MEC Panyaza Lesufi issued an apology to anxious parents for the technical difficulties experienced.

“We sincerely apologise to parents and guardians for the inconvenience they encountered when our System opened for applications. We thank our technicians for swiftly resolving the matter, which has lead us to processing a massive amount of successful applications on the very first day.”

The Application period will continue until 19 August 2022, closing at midnight.

Parents/caregivers are encouraged to either upload certified copies of the required documents onto the system, or submit them at schools they’ve applied to within seven school days.

To receive further assistance, parents/caregivers can visit the GDE’s District Offices and Decentralised Walk-In Centres or call the GDE’s contact Centre on 0800 000 789 or send a message to their Whatsapp with the number 060 891 0361.
