Hopes Over Third Phase of Basic Education Teacher Assistant Initiative
The Presidental Youth Employment Initiative in the Basic Education Sector was a success. More than 500 000 individuals were employed through the initiative.
Phase one of the initiative was successfully implemented from 1 December 2020 to 31 April 2021, where approximately 300 000 people participated.
While the second phase, which comes to an end in March 2022, helped more than 287 000 people receive employment.
The Basic Education Department held a workshop on the initiative which looked into the successes and challenges of the programme.
Various provinces made presentations at the workshop on how the initiative worked in their schools.
The Eastern Cape province stated that the issue of payments of the Education and General Assistants have been resolved and hopes that there will be a third phase of the initiative as it has a direct investment in skills development.
The Free State and Gauteng also enjoyed the programme and felt that it benefitted both the schools and individuals.
According to the department, the programme was able to assist amid high unemployment figures in the country.
