Is your mother or grandmother one of those stylish women who wore miniskirts, hot-pants, bellbottoms, platform shoes, afro-hair styles in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s?
Well, we want to hear from you!
What are we looking for?
We want your photographs. We want photographs of your mothers, grandmothers, and aunties taken in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. We want them wearing miniskirts, short dresses hot-pants, halter-tops, tank-tops, drain pipes, peddle-pushers, bellbottoms, platform shoes, afro-hair styles.
The photos do not have to be in perfect quality. They can be torn, crumpled, in grayscale, colour, black and white, in whichever size, all are welcome. They should be accompanied with information about the people in the photographs; their names, how they are related to you, where the photo was taken, when and why.
Let us celebrate these pioneering Kenyan women by holding an exhibition of their photographs.

PROJECT DURATION :6 – 12 Months
You get your relatives, friends or yourself recognised as part of history. You get to tell a story that shows the world another side of Kenya. And really you get to pass on memories and histories to future generations.
Who do we wish to award?
Hivos together with Voice and the Women@Work programme will use the photographs to hold an exhibition series entitled; “OUR GRANDMOTHERS MINISKIRTS” in 6 counties, Mombasa, Kisumu, Naivasha, Nanyuki, Bungoma, and Nairobi.
The three (3) individuals, per county, whose pictures will be selected, will receive a small grant amount of € 6,000 to be spent collectively in driving conversations around the right of Women having autonomy in their choice of dressing. The grant amount for this award will be channelled through an existing Voice grantee present in the relevant county.
Who knew grandma wore a miniskirt?
We encourage that the selection of pictures represents and/or submission comes from any of the following Voice groups; People with disabilities, Age-discriminated vulnerable groups, notably the young and elderly, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Intersex and Transgender persons, Indigenous groups and ethnic minorities.

Once completed, the signed release form, including the scanned photographs needs to be uploaded through the online application system Please note that the maximum file size of uploaded documents is 10.0 MB.

You can submit your scanned photo including your name and contact information, in digital format to: firstname.lastname@example.org and cc email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org and Kenya@voice.global or drop them off at Hivos, ACS Plaza, Lenana Road, 3rd Floor. We will contact you to follow-up with any other information required and to conclude the contracting process.
