Application for SASSA R350 Special Covid-19 Relief Grant for South Africans
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has opened the process for applications of the R350 Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant for unemployed people.
The amount will be paid to qualifying applications from May – October 2020.
The requirement of proof of address for the grant application has fallen away, but applicants must still provide their residential address.
The grant forms part of the R500 billion economic and social relief measures announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last month.
Applicants must be:
- Above the age of 18;
- Not receiving any income;
- Not receiving any social grant;
- Not receiving any unemployment insurance benefit and does not qualify to receive unemployment insurance benefits;
- Not be receiving a stipend from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme; and
- Not resident in a government funded or subsidized institution.
Applications for child support and foster child grants will be done on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Again, priority will be given to applications of care-givers of children born just before or during the lockdown period, amended care-givers, and applications arising from new foster care orders that were issued during the lockdown period.
Fridays will be reserved for those citizens who could not be served during the designated days. Additionally, Fridays will also be dedicated to finalising the outstanding applications that were received immediately before the lockdown.
Under level 4 lockdown conditions, applications for disability grants, care dependency grants and grants-in-aid will not be considered. This is due to the fact that there is still restricted access to health facilities for the required medical assessments. SASSA is engaging the disability sector to advise them of this, but also to get suggestions as to how this can be managed with the least risk to this sector.
Your support in getting this message to our communities, and appealing to our citizens not to bring young children to the offices will come in handy. Likewise, all persons who visit SASSA’s service centres should either wear face masks or adequately cover their mouths and noses. Physical distancing between one person and others must be maintained at all times and all citizens who access the offices will be sanitised for their safety and the safety of others.
